Let's Go LTE Crazy!
The discussion below talks about the complexities/confusion surrounding LTE and its variation or earlier and later versions, and because of the slight deception, whether intentional or marketing strategy, adds up to the puzzlement.
I think Axelei was able to explain it real good...though I'm still at a lost and suffering nosebleed. Read on.
"Let’s make this clear since you are spreading wrong information in your podcast and blogs.Actually anything between HSPA and the original WiMax is called 3G Transitional and it pertains to all 3.5G, 3.75G, and 3.9G. It doesn’t matter which one you pick, its an unofficial name that didn’t get certified.
HSPA+ is 3.75G, the current LTE of Smart and Globe is 3.9G and LTE Advanced is the real 4G based on the final spec.
Please read up on your topic before making any comments."
However, companies (including Globe), called it 4G as most of US did when they didn’t have the real 4G spec.
Today, you have LTE (advanced), as you say and that’s the official spec 4G.
Whichever the case, anything that isn’t LTE is considered 3.9g or lower.
"What is funny is that you keep on referring to HSPA+ as 3.9G. I don’t know where you got that information. Please, if you have to criticize the telco, be properly informed beforehand."
Here you go then:
http://www.eetimes.com/design/microwave-rf-design/4018983/3GPP-Long-Term-Evolution-System-Overview-Product-Development-and-Test-Challenges
LTE in Context
3GPP LTE is one of five major wireless standards sometimes referred to as “3.9G.” The other so-called 3.9G standards are: 3GPP HSPA+, 3GPP EDGE Evolution, 3GPP2 ultra-mobile broadband (UMB), and Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e), which encompasses the earlier WiBro developed by the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) in Korea.
There’s this too:
http://www.brighthand.com/special_section/?ss_id=101&page_id=20
This reality, though, hasn’t stopped those carriers from marketing LTE, WiMAX (a 3G technology, by the way, according to the ITU), and even HSPA and HSPA+ as 4G. Such is not entirely unfair, as performance for each of these can easily exceed the two Mbps of the ITU’s 3G definition. Other unofficial designations, including 3.5G, 3.75G, and 3.9G have consequently been used to describe these technologies.
And then there’s Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_mobile_phone_standards
3G transitional
(3.5G, 3.75G, 3.9G)
3GPP family
HSPA HSPA+ LTE (E-UTRA)
3GPP2 family
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A (TIA/EIA/IS-856-A)
EV-DO Revision B (TIA/EIA/IS-856-B) DO Advanced
IEEE family
Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) Flash-OFDM IEEE 802.20
—————
Of course in official ITU terms 3.9G should stand for LTE (non Advanced). However, everybody has been using the terms loosely – just like when WiFi N was still in draft form. You should also look at how Globe was marketing their HSPA+ as “4G”. Shouldn’t they be calling it 3.5G? I don’t know.
http://www.yugatech.com/list-of-globe-hspa-4g-sites-in-metro-manila/

http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/companies/10416-globe-beats-rivals-in-4g-mobile-race
Perhaps the telcos have to clearly define their standards better and not confuse its users before we should start really using their official names.

How Has Social Media Helped Your Community?
During the heavy flooding in
the Philippines by a monsoon we just called "Habagat", I used Facebook
to post pictures and status of flooded areas on my page so that the
people who do not have access to computers but have mobile phones with
Internet capabilities were able to see the status of the flooding in
Manila. It also helped the Filipinos who were based abroad or out of the
country during that time and were concerned of the conditions of their
families and relatives here in the Philippines.

Amazon Unveils Kindle Paperwhite
Amazon unveiled a new “frontlit” e-ink Kindle, with a sharper display called “Kindle Paperwhite.”
Jeffrey Preston "Jeff" Bezos, Founder and CEO of Amazon, took the stage to detail some of its impressive specs. The Kindle Paperwhite includes 25% more contrast than the Pearl screens featured in existing Kindle models and touts a 62% higher-resolution display. It measures in at 9.1 mm with a thin bezel and weighs in at 7.5 ounces. It is slimmer than a magazine and lighter than a paperback. All of its seven fonts are adjustable in size.
It also includes a “Time to Read” feature, which tracks your reading speed and informs you how much time it will likely take you to finish a chapter. This could help you decide whether or not to go to sleep or stay up late to finish a chapter, based on your own speed. Another feature called X-Ray provides character bios and allows you to jump back into the part of a book where they are first introduced.
The Kindle Paperwhite 3G is $179 and $119 for Wi-Fi only.
The device will likely compete with Barnes & Noble’s Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight device. which is priced at $139 for the Wi-Fi only version.
The Kindle Paperwhite will ship on October 1 and pre-orders start today.

Ubisoft Scraps Always-On DRM, Favors One-Time Activation
In an interview with RPS, Ubisoft worldwide games director Stephanie Perotti divulged that the company is dropping its infamous always-on DRM strategy. In fact, Ubisoft already quietly euthanized the program a few months ago -- probably following the From Dust fiasco -- but now it is official.
Ubisoft has perhaps been the largest proponent of always-on DRM, incorporating it into many high-profile games. The company has gone on record stating that always-on DRM schemes have shown a clear reduction in piracy, but Perotti said she considers that an "unfortunate" comment, alluding the fact that Ubisoft has always refused to publish any substantive data.
While Perotti and corporate communications manager Michael Burk managed to deftly skirt around most DRM-related questions, but they did assure RPS that always-on DRM is buried and gone. From now on, Ubisoft will rely on simple, one-time activation methods. Cited as an example, Assassin's Creed 3 will require a one-time activation, but may be installed on an unlimited number of computers. And, in an unusual twist for the company, the game will allow single-player action without an Internet connection.
Always-on DRM has frequently been criticized as an unnecessarily draconian form of digital rights management, namely due to its burdensome nature for legitimate, paying customers. When conditions aren't ideal (e.g. poor internet service, PC upgrades and server issues), most always-online solutions break down -- even in single player -- and quickly convert what would otherwise be joyous fun into utter frustration. Interestingly, the overwhelming majority of readers who responded to our poll claim DRM-related issues have spoiled their fun on at least one occasion.
Additionally, the efficacy of always-on DRM continues to be questioned. While it may curb casual copying, studies have shown inconvenient DRM measures may actually increase piracy. Meanwhile, hackers and crackers seem to always find a way to circumvent even the toughest DRM mechanisms and have even exploited such schemes in dangerous ways.
Although PC games account for only 7 percent of Ubisoft's sales, Perotti said that Ubisoft is working hard to close the gaps between PC and console games. The company has been criticized by PC gamers for not adequately tailoring cross-platform games, leaving PC ports too "consolified" for PC-gaming tastes. Also, console releases frequently ship months ahead of their PC counterparts -- another issue Ubisoft is aiming to address.

Microsoft Philippines Appoint New Managing Director
Microsoft has appointed a Filipina to manage its operations in the Philippines with the announcement of
Karrie Capellan-Ilagan as the local unit’s new Managing Director.
Ilagan, formerly the enterprise sales director of Microsoft Philippines, will be replacing John Bessey, who served at the top post of Microsoft Philippines for three years.
The appointment of Ilagan comes as the software company prepares to release Windows 8, its attempt at staying relevant in the tech industry amid taking hits from smartphone and tablet manufacturers.
“Our focus has changed tremendously over the past years. We are not just a company that sells software,” Ilagan emphasized in a statement.
As a six-year Microsoft executive, Ilagan led the expansion of Microsoft’s footprint in key enterprise customers in the Philippines, as well as the launching of key Microsoft products in the Philippines such as Windows Vista, Office 2007, Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008.
Ilagan said she will hit the ground running with continuing to “grow the local software economy” as well as pushing for consumers’ rights to have a choice in technology that brings them the best benefits, whether in personal or in business use.
“I believe that there are still a large number of Filipino companies that can achieve global competitiveness by enhancing their IT capabilities,” she said, adding that with the right combination of technology, education, and appropriate government help, “Microsoft Philippines can make a valuable contribution to the development of the country.”
An 18-year IT veteran, Ilagan served in key executive positions in a number of technology companies in the Philippines. Prior to joining Microsoft, she led IBM’s global small and medium business unit in the Philippines from 2003 to 2005, and was country manager of its personal systems group from 2000 to 2002.
Ilagan will be the second Filipina IT executive appointed at a top management position this year, following the assignment of Mariels Almeda Winhoffer as the new country managing director of IBM Philippines.
